30 Years of LGBT Film in New York: NewFest 2018

30 Years of LGBT Film in New York: NewFest 2018 | LGBTQ+ Movies, Theatre, FIlm & Music | Scoop.it

It’s a well-known fact marginalized populations experience a dearth of representation in media, including works that portray these groups but do so in a misrepresented or negative light. While some films from the past released nationwide do depict marginalized groups, including LGBT people, it is also the 21st century and their portrayals may not hold up to modern scrutiny (i.e. 1980’s Cruising or 1997’s In & Out).

Matt Skallerud's insight:

Entering its 30th year, NewFest, New York’s LGBT film festival, is a space for film buffs, LGBT travelers, locals with a love for the arts and everyone in between to view the latest and best of new works relating to the LGBT community.

Desiree Akhavan interview: 'Bisexuality is taboo in both the queer and the straight world' | LGBTQ+ Movies, Theatre, FIlm & Music | Scoop.it

When Desiree Akhavan first dreamt up The Bisexual – a comedy-drama series about a lesbian who realises she’s also attracted to men – she pitched the idea to just about every network in LA. It didn’t go well. One told her that they already had Transparent, a show full to the brim with queer people, and thus had no need for another. The next said they already had a female, brown-skinned lead in The Mindy Project (never mind that Akhavan is Iranian-American, and Mindy Kaling is Indian-American). And on it went.
