Matt Skallerud's insight:
We Are a Masterpiece takes place at the dawn of the AIDS crisis, when the disease was still a mystery. In Kalamazoo, Michigan, Joan, a no-nonsense nurse, becomes a sort of fairy godmother to the town’s gay community when no one else will step up to care for them as they die one by one. She becomes their friend, their mother, their sister, as they navigate life and death with this new plague; caring for them, taking in John – an artist who becomes like a son to her, burying the dead on her property. Out of the ashes of their collective lives, lifelong bonds are forged and beauty is found even at the darkest of moments.
More than a year before the Stonewall riots changed the face of gay activism in the U.S., Mart Crowley put homosexuality center stage in 1968’s The Boys in the Band, his closet-smashing group portrait of nine New York men desperate for love but rotten with self-hatred.
The stars came out for prominent entertainment personality, Richard Skipper, Sunday, February 11, in celebration of the celebrator - his birthday. Producer RUSS WOOLLEY gathered some stunning talent to serenade the host with the most at the Laurie Beechman Theatre on 42nd Street with songs and stories bringing on laughter, tears, and a lots of applause.
In the Off-Broadway musical “A Letter to Harvey Milk,” the slain San Francisco supervisor and community leader becomes not just a symbol of gay liberation, but of Jewish pride as well. At a time when the issue of gender politics is part of the American cultural conversation, the play — originally produced in 2012 — seems to have found its moment once again. (It runs through June 30 at Manhattan’s Acorn Theater.)

To celebrate and honor the birthday of NY entertainment great RICHARD SKIPPER, Russ Woolley has assembled a great “secret and surprise” cast to entertain and honor our dear friend… RICHARD SKIPPER has become synonymous with “feel good entertainment of the highest quality”. For decades Richard has entertained thousands and celebrated the careers of many of Theatre Row’s finest and most honored stars… It is now our turn to honor RICHARD SKIPPER on his actual birthday… The afternoon will prove to be an event where all will arrive and leave with smiles! Richard has no idea of the line-up so this will be similar to the old-fashioned TV specials and series where we get to chat with and honor this very giving man, RICHARD SKIPPER…
This three-hander by the award-winning dramatist Australian playwright, Tommy Murphy, arrives in the West End, having had a successful run at the King's Head Theatre in Islington. Catching up with it now, I'm glad to vouch that Adam Spreadbury-Maher's beautifully cast production well deserves this transfer. The piece is set in Sydney's King's Cross area (roughly equivalent to Soho) where the sixteen year old Shane, in flight from his rural hometown of Goulburn and lying about his age, has fetched up and secured himself a job in a bottlo (off-license).
