About the show

Musical genius Richard Wagner (Eddie Korbich) and his devoted wife Cosima (Claire Brownell) find themselves in a moral, political and musical dilemma when King Ludwig of Bavaria (Carlo Bosticco) insists that the son of a rabbi, Hermann Levi (Geoffrey Cantor), conduct the premiere of Wagner’s sacred final opera, Parsifal. In this comedic spin on real-life events, Maestro Levi must consider his complex relationship with the Wagners. Does Art have its “special needs,” after all? MY PARSIFAL CONDUCTOR is the World Premiere comedy that dares to probe that question.

Written by EMMY and Writers’ Guild Winner Allan Leicht, MY PARSIFAL CONDUCTOR is directed by the founder of the New York’s Chelsea Theatre Center, Robert Kalfin and produced by the award-winning not-for-profit theatre company The Directors Company, by special arrangement with producer Ted Snowdon.

ALLAN LEICHT

Playwright

ALLAN LEICHT is a multiple EMMY Award, Writers’ Guild Award, Christopher Award-winning writer of television movies, including most notably, Adam, starring Daniel J. Travanti and JoBeth Williams, and Lady in a Corner, starring Loretta Young and Brian Keith (NBC); several comedy series, including Kate and Allie (CBS), and The Thorns (ABC) in collaboration with Mike Nichols; dramatic series, most notably, Mariah (ABC); and daytime dramas Ryan’s Hope and One Life to Live. As a director, he brought William Golding’s comedy, The Brass Butterfly, to the New York stage, starring Sam Waterston and Paxton Whitehead, as well as many regional theater productions. His musical, The Adventures of Friar Tuck, for which he wrote book and lyrics, premiered at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center. He produced Rashi, A Light after the Dark Ages, a video production starring Leonard Nimoy and Sir Paul Scofield and Rambam, The Story of Maimonides with Mr. Nimoy and Armand Assante. Allan divides his time between New York and Jerusalem, where he recently appeared as an actor in Shakespeare’s Henry V. He is married to actress and designer Renee Lippin Leicht and they have three children and two grandchildren.

ROBERT KALFIN

Director

ROBERT KALFIN has directed more than 500 productions and workshops of new plays, musicals and the classics in venues on Broadway, Off-Broadway, in major American regional theaters, in Europe, the Middle East and as far abroad as Siberia. He is the founder of New York’s Chelsea Theatre Center, which has won five Tony Awards, 21 Obie Awards and four Tony Nominations. Soon to celebrate the 60th Anniversary of his first professional New York production, Mr. Kalfin recently staged The Property at The Harold Clurman Theater. Broadway credits include Strider, Happy End (starring Meryl Streep and Christopher Lloyd), Yentl (starring Tovah Feldshuh), Truly Blessed, a Celebration of Mahalia Jackson; and as Chelsea Co-Producer of Harold Prince’s production of Candide. He directed the television production of The Prince Of Homburg starring Frank Langella for PBS Great Performances “Theatre in America” Series. He has served as Artistic Director for the Chelsea Theatre Center, the Cincinnati Playhouse-in-the-Park and the Pirate Playhouse on Sanibel Island and on the Boards of the Society of Stage Directors and Choreographers and Theater Communications Group.. In 2015, he was honored with the “Legend of Off-Broadway” Off-Broadway Alliance Award. Mr. Kalfin attended Alfred University and has his M.F.A. degree in Directing from the Yale School of Drama. His notable contributions to the American Theatre scene are detailed in Chelsea on the Edge. He recently completed his guide-book for young directors, Making it Safe to be Unsafe and has two new musicals in the works.

He has presented 4 other opera-themed plays: Terrence McNally’s Master Class starring Tyne Daly on Broadway and in London; McNally’s The Stendhal Syndrome starring Richard Thomas and Isabella Rossellini at Primary Stages; Jonathan Tolins’s The Twilight of the Golds and Stephen Temperly’s Souvenir, both on Broadway. He was a lead producer of Tolins’s very successful Buyer & Cellar starring Michael Urie (Rattlestick, Barrow Street, national tour and London) and was recently associated with Lynn Nottage’s Pulitzer Prize-winning Sweat, Edward Albee’s Three Tall Women, Katori Hall’s The Mountaintop, and David Cromer’s production of Wilder’s Our Town, along with musicals like Spring Awakening and A Gentlemen’s Guide To Love & Murder. ALLAN LEICHT is a multiple EMMY Award, Writers’ Guild Award, Christopher Award-winning writer of television movies, including most notably, Adam, starring Daniel J. Travanti and JoBeth Williams, and Lady in a Corner, starring Loretta Young and Brian Keith (NBC); several comedy series, including Kate and Allie (CBS), and The Thorns (ABC) in collaboration with Mike Nichols; dramatic series, most notably, Mariah (ABC); and daytime dramas Ryan’s Hope and One Life to Live. As a director, he brought William Golding’s comedy, The Brass Butterfly, to the New York stage, starring Sam Waterston and Paxton Whitehead, as well as many regional theater productions. His musical, The Adventures of Friar Tuck, for which he wrote book and lyrics, premiered at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center. He produced Rashi, A Light after the Dark Ages, a video production starring Leonard Nimoy and Sir Paul Scofield and Rambam, The Story of Maimonides with Mr. Nimoy and Armand Assante. Allan divides his time between New York and Jerusalem, where he recently appeared as an actor in Shakespeare’s Henry V. He is married to actress and designer Renee Lippin Leicht and they have three children and two grandchildren.

ROBERT KALFIN

Director

ROBERT KALFIN has directed more than 500 productions and workshops of new plays, musicals and the classics in venues on Broadway, Off-Broadway, in major American regional theaters, in Europe, the Middle East and as far abroad as Siberia. He is the founder of New York’s Chelsea Theatre Center, which has won five Tony Awards, 21 Obie Awards and four Tony Nominations. Soon to celebrate the 60th Anniversary of his first professional New York production, Mr. Kalfin recently staged The Property at The Harold Clurman Theater. Broadway credits include Strider, Happy End (starring Meryl Streep and Christopher Lloyd), Yentl (starring Tovah Feldshuh), Truly Blessed, a Celebration of Mahalia Jackson; and as Chelsea Co-Producer of Harold Prince’s production of Candide. He directed the television production of The Prince Of Homburg starring Frank Langella for PBS Great Performances “Theatre in America” Series. He has served as Artistic Director for the Chelsea Theatre Center, the Cincinnati Playhouse-in-the-Park and the Pirate Playhouse on Sanibel Island and on the Boards of the Society of Stage Directors and Choreographers and Theater Communications Group.. In 2015, he was honored with the “Legend of Off-Broadway” Off-Broadway Alliance Award. Mr. Kalfin attended Alfred University and has his M.F.A. degree in Directing from the Yale School of Drama. His notable contributions to the American Theatre scene are detailed in Chelsea on the Edge. He recently completed his guide-book for young directors, Making it Safe to be Unsafe and has two new musicals in the works.

He has designed for Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey, Colorado, Alabama, and North Carolina Shakespeare Festivals. Dance designs include Rioult Dance, Viewsonic Dance & North Carolina Dance Theatre. Opera designs for Central City Opera, Boston Lyric, Lake George, Florida State Opera, Pennsylvania Opera Theatre, Syracuse, Chatauqua, Opera Theatre of Pittsburgh, Fort Worth, Orchestra of St. Luke’s and Manhattan School of Music. Mr. Feiner teaches at Queens College, CUNY.

GAIL COOPER-HECHT (Costume Designer) is quite delighted to resume her collaboration with Bob Kalfin, She has designed more than 400 productions on Broadway and Off, National and International Tours, Regional Theaters, TV, and Operas, including productions for Tony Randall, Jack Klugman, Carol Channing, Maurice Evans, Helen Hayes, Robert Goulet, Eartha KItt, etc. Has been Resident Designer for the Mirror Rep. for more than 20 years; even designing Geraldine Page’s Academy Award dress, and Costume Designer for The Music Fairs Theaters for 25 years. Recent NYC: Eleanor Reissa’s Hershele Ostropolyer, Theo Bikel in Scholem Alechem (Folksbiene), The Shanghai Gesture (Mirror Rep.), Johnny on the Spot (St.Clemens),Three Mo Tenors (Little Shubert), Room Service (Soho Playhouse), Arrivals (Bank St.), Fugue (Cherry Lane), Yiddish Pirates of Penzance (Folksbiene), sA Stone Carver (Soho Playhouse), The Harlem Ghospel Singers European Tours and the film: The Passion Of Miss Augusta. A graduate of Boston University’s SFA&A, has taught Costume Design at Marymount Manhattan College, been a board member of the League of Professional Theatre Women and member of United Scenic Artists Local 829. And has been nominated for an AUDELCO Award for Massinessa an ACE Award for “Purlie”/ PBS Great Performances.
