Will You Like HBO’s Looking: The Movie? Depends What You’re Into

Will You Like HBO’s Looking: The Movie? Depends What You’re Into | LGBT Movies, Theatre & FIlm | Scoop.it

When Looking premiered back in 2014, you could say I found it politically troubling. Those issues faded somewhat in season two; but by then, I had decided that politics aside, the earnest tone and gauzy approach of director Andrew Haigh and writer Michael Lannan just weren’t for me. If you like misty shots of the San Francisco skyline and close-ups of Jonathan Groff’s variations on a pained smile, you may enjoy Looking: The Movie, the show’s feature-length finale airing Saturday on HBO.

‘Viva’ Puts Cuba’s LGBT Culture in the Spotlight

‘Viva’ Puts Cuba’s LGBT Culture in the Spotlight | LGBT Movies, Theatre & FIlm | Scoop.it
With the recent thaw in Cuba-U.S. relations and notable progress Cuba seems to be making on LGBT rights, the new film “Viva” is arriving to theaters at an opportune time.
Matt Skallerud's insight:

The film tells the story of Jesus (Héctor Medina), a young hairdresser working at a nightclub in Havana that showcases drag performers. Jesus wants to be a performer himself, and his mentor, Mama (Luis Alberto García), encourages him to take the stage. When Jesus’s estranged father Angel (Jorge Perugorría) suddenly reenters his life, father and son clash, struggling to accept and understand one another.

Queer Commitment: Netflix's LGBT-inclusive Content

Queer Commitment: Netflix's LGBT-inclusive Content | LGBT Movies, Theatre & FIlm | Scoop.it
If ever there’s one area where Netflix can comfortably beat its more traditional TV-based competitors, it’s in the representation it gives to LGBT characters.
Matt Skallerud's insight:

As if it weren’t enough that the streaming giant’s catalogue is crammed with an array of LGBT films and television shows, both recent and classic, Netflix’s original content is also rife with characters that represent various aspects of the queer spectrum. From the outrageous, flamboyant Titus Andromedon in Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, to the intense relationship between Piper and Alex in Orange Is the New Black, to the entire main cast of Sense8, Netflix and its creators have committed to an array of depictions of LGBT people, both comical and serious. We highlight nine series by Netflix that showcase LGBT characters.

Sex Tips For Straight Women From A Gay Man

Sex Tips For Straight Women From A Gay Man | LGBT Movies, Theatre & FIlm | Scoop.it

Perfect date night or girl's night out! In this hilarious new three-character comedy based on the best-selling book of the same title, audiences are welcomed into a fun-filled world of foolproof moves and insider advice that could only be culled from that most insightful of individuals: the gay man.

Matt Skallerud's insight:

The play is set at a local university auditorium where the English Department holds its monthly meet the authors event.  Robyn is the shy and studious moderator of the event and this month's featured author is Dan Anderson of Sex Tips for Straight Women from a Gay Man.  The third character is a hunky stage assistant of Eastern European descent, Stefan.

Thwarting Robyn's attempts to moderate a scholarly discussion of the book, Dan aims to entertain those in attendance with a highly theatrical, audience-interactive sex tip seminar.  Will the power of Dan's tips prove too titillating for even Robyn to resist?  Will Stefan's muscles be used for more than moving heavy scenery?  As with everything at this event...that is for Dan to know, and you to find out!

Twinks, Bears, and U-Hauls: TV Has Some Strange Ideas About “Gay Culture.” | LGBT Movies, Theatre & FIlm | Scoop.it

In the last few years, television has gotten better at including LGBTQ characters, but its representation of gay culture is still rather limited. While some shows—like Difficult People, Happy Endings, and The Fosters—reveal an understanding of the way queer people live now, others seem content to repeat outdated stereotypes and to obsess about gay men’s sexual types and lesbians’ use of U-Haul as a verb.

Fur Will Fly in 'Where The Bears Are' Season 5 - TRAILER | LGBT Movies, Theatre & FIlm | Scoop.it
Campy gay web series Where The Bears Are has just released a new trailer for its fifth season, promising plenty of sex, drama and mystery.
Matt Skallerud's insight:

Funded through a successful Kickstarter campaign, season 5 sees the bears head to Palm Springs for what at first promises to be a romantic honeymoon but then devolves into drama, murder and mystery.
