On September 6, 2018, singer Pragya Pallavi sat glued to her laptop with a group of friends. The Supreme Court of India was hearing a case that would determine the fate of Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code, an outdated law criminalizing homosexual sex with jail time and a fine. She had a feeling that the hearing would go well, but was still “surprised and relieved” when the court decided to overturn the law.
